Rocky Intertidal Education with WiLDCOAST and La Jolla High School
December 13, 2016
This week, exceptionally low tides offered the opportunity to get out and explore the beautiful rocky intertidal of La Jolla Cove within the Matlahuayl State Marine Reserve. Project partner WiLDCOAST, a local conservation-focused non-profit, capitalized on these tides by working with La Jolla High School Environmental Science teacher Mr. Howard Tenenbaum to organize an intertidal education event.
Rising Tides scientist Niko Kaplanis and other researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography were recruited to lead a group of nearly 100 students on an educational tour of the intertidal. Throughout the low tide, these Scripps researchers taught students about the ecology of the area, and its unique history of protection status. We would like to thank Mr. Tenenbaum and Cory Pukini from WiLDCOAST for providing us the opportunity to help increase environmental awareness and stewardship for San Diego's rocky intertidal ecosystems by organizing this event.
