Using structure-from-motion software we convert thousands of digital photographs into 3-dimensional point clouds representing our plots that typically contain more than a billion points. Visualizing this many points on a screen is not an easy task. Fortunately we have had the fortune to work with Vid Petrovic, a software engineer and graduate student from the UC San Diego Department of Computer Science and Engineering, who has developed a visualization platform called Viscore. This platform allows us to view and share our plots in 3D, and to extract ecological information using sampling tools he has built into the platform. Check out this virtual tour of our plot at Cabrillo National Monument, Zone 1.
